England’s express pacer Jofra Archer has confirmed that he has informed the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) of his desire to feature in the remaining two Tests of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, as well as the Ashes series later this year in Australia.
The recently concluded Lord’s Test marked Archer’s return to the Test arena after a four-year break, and he made an immediate impact. His fiery spells played a key role in England’s thrilling 22-run win, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. With the fourth Test in Manchester shaping up as a potential series decider, Archer has made his intentions clear.
Archer eager to play the last Two Tests
“I can play the other two [against India] if they let me,” Archer said following the victory at Lord’s. “I don’t want to lose this series. I told Keysey [Rob Key] I wanted to play the Test summer and I wanted to play the Ashes. I think one tick is already there and I will do everything possible in my power to be on the plane in November.”
Reflecting on his journey back to the longest format, Archer acknowledged the challenge of returning to Tests after focusing on white-ball formats over the past couple of years.
“Obviously, Test cricket was always going to be the hardest to return to. I’ve played a lot of 50-over and T20 cricket over the past two years, but the guys have played some really exciting Test cricket under Baz [Brendon McCullum]. The team’s mentality suits how I enjoy playing, so I was eager to get back—without needing anyone to convince me.”
England have named a 14-member squad for the fourth Test at Old Trafford, with veteran Liam Dawson earning a recall after eight years to replace the injured Shoaib Bashir. Sam Cook has been left out of the side.
