Jonathan Trott’s tenure as Afghanistan’s head coach will come to an end after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced on Monday, November 3.
Trott, who took charge in 2022, has overseen Afghanistan’s progress in international cricket. Under his guidance, Afghanistan qualified for their first-ever T20 World Cup semi-final in 2024.
Reflecting on his journey, Trott expressed gratitude for his time with the Afghanistan team. “It has been a privilege to work with the Afghanistan national team and to witness their passion, resilience, and hunger to achieve greatness,” he said.
The former England batter added: “I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and I will always remain a supporter of Afghan cricket. I wish the team and the Afghan people continued success in the years ahead.”
Trott will serve as head coach of the Gulf Giants in the upcoming season of the ILT20, which begins on December 2. He also coached the Pretoria Capitals during the 2024–25 SA20 season.
Afghanistan will also part ways with their batting coach, Andrew Puttick, upon the expiry of his contract on 31 December.
The ACB stated that the change was part of a long-term plan to take the team into a new era. “Just as teams evolve, so do their leadership and strategic needs. No international side remains under a single coach forever, and this change marks a new chapter for Afghanistan as the Board continues building towards long-term excellence,” the ACB said.
Afghanistan recently completed a clean sweep over Zimbabwe in their three-match series.
