In a major development, Jose Molina has been appointed as new Mohun Bagan head coach. It’s official. the new head coach of Mohun Bagan Super Giants, succeeding Antonio Lopez Habas. A close source from Spain has confirmed to RevSportz that Molina, the former ISL-winning coach with the now-defunct Atletico De Kolkata, will return to Kolkata to take charge of the reigning ISL Shield winners.
Molina, a seasoned coach with extensive experience, has coached several Spanish clubs, including a stint in La Liga with Villarreal. His coaching resume also includes managing Getafe B, Villarreal B and C, and San Luis Club, among others.
Mohun Bagan clinched the ISL 2023-24 Shield under the guidance of Spanish head coach Antonio Lopez Habas, who joined the club mid-season after Juan Ferrando’s departure. Although Habas agreed to remain with the club, he was reluctant to continue as head coach due to personal reasons. Consequently, the Green and Maroon management decided to appoint another Spanish head coach, choosing Jose Molina as Habas’ successor.
Mohun Bagan have secured their qualification for the prestigious AFC Champions League 2 after winning the ISL Shield. Aiming for an impressive performance in this showpiece event, the club sought a high-profile head coach and ultimately reached an agreement with Molina, who is set to return to his familiar territory, Kolkata.
Molina previously guided ATK to the ISL title in the third edition of the league. However, his new role with Mohun Bagan SG comes with immense expectations from one of the largest fan bases in the country, presenting Molina with a significant challenge.
