Lucknow Super Giants have named Justin Langer as their new head coach. The former Australian opener will replace Andy Flower, who served as the head coach of Super Giants for two seasons. The IPL franchise has decided to not renew the contract of Flower.
“Lucknow Super Giants are on the journey of building a great story in the IPL,” Langer said in a statement released by the franchise. “We all have a role to play in that journey and I am excited to be a part of the team moving forward.”
Under Langer’s coaching, Perth Scorchers won three Big Bash League titles. He also coached Australia from 2018 and 2022, with the side winning the T20 World Cup for the first time in 2021 in the UAE. During his tenure, Australia also retained the Ashes by drawing the Test series 2-2 in England in 2019, and followed it up with a 4-0 series win at home in 2021-22. He resigned as Australia’s coach in early 2022 after deciding to not take up a short-term contract offered by the Australian board.
Langer also collaborated with Gautam Gambhir, Super Giants’ director of cricket, in 2015. At that time, Gambhir was trying to make a comeback into the Indian team.
Meanwhile, with Flower as head coach, LSG qualified for the playoffs twice but lost both times in the Eliminator phase. Currently, Flower is working as a consultant for the Australian team in the Ashes. “As the two-year contract of Andy Flower comes to an end, Lucknow Supergiants thanks Andy Flower for his contribution,” LSG said via an official media release.
