South Africa pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against Australia due to inflammation in his ankle. Cricket South Africa (CSA) provided the update before the start of the first ODI in Cairns.
The fast bowler underwent scans which confirmed the extent of the injury. He will remain in Australia with the team and will undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of the national team medical staff.
“Proteas Men’s fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against Australia due to inflammation of his right ankle. The 30-year-old underwent a scan on Monday, which confirmed the extent of the injury. He will remain in Australia and undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of the Proteas medical staff. Kwena Maphaka, who finished as the leading wicket-taker in the recent T20 International series, has been added to the squad,” stated CSA’s media release.
On the eve of the match, left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka was added to the Proteas ODI squad on Monday, so no replacement player will be flown in. Maphaka was the leading wicket-taker across both teams in the recent three-match T20I series against Australia.
In Rabada’s absence, Lungi Ngidi will lead the new-look Proteas seam-bowling attack featuring the likes of Maphaka, Nandre Burger, Corbin Bosch and Wiaan Mulder. For the ongoing Cairns ODI, South Africa have gone with Ngidi and Burger, with Mulder as the third pace bowling option. Dewald Brevis and Prenelan Subrayen will make their ODI debuts.
