Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has criticized the Indian cricket team management on Axar Patel’s removal as vice-captain from T20Is. Shubman Gill has been named as the vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup.
The all-rounder was appointed as the vice-captain during the five-match home T20 series against England earlier this year, which Team India won by 4-1. He was also part of the three-match home ODI series against England, which India clean swept by 3-0.
In that T20I series, he claimed six wickets in five matches. Then, in the ODI series, he picked up three wickets.
Following the announcement of India’s Asia Cup squad, Kaif addressed his disappointment on Patel’s removal as vice-captain on social media and claimed that Patel deserves an explanation.
Kaif wrote on X: “I hope Axar Patel was informed about his removal from vice-captaincy in advance and he didn’t come to know about it from the press conference. Axar did no wrong so he deserves an explanation.”
The all-rounder was influential in India’s 2024 T20 World Cup victory by picking up nine wickets and scoring 92 runs in a total of eight matches. He was named the Player of the Match for his 3/23 spell in the semi-final clash against England.
Talking about his T20I career, Patel has played 71 matches so far. In those games, he has taken 71 wickets along with 535 runs with the bat, at a strike rate of 139.32.
