On 31 August 2014, former New Zealand cricketer Martin Crowe named four exceptional players—Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson—as the “Fab Four”. Eleven years later, the discussion has resurfaced, but this time the question is: who from the next generation could be the new Fab Four? Raising this question was none other than one of the original elite quartet himself—Kane Williamson.

In a recent interview with The Cricket Monthly, Williamson was asked to name the next group of players who could join the elite club. His selections, however, were based on players excelling across multiple formats of the game.

“The players that come to mind in terms of multi-format ability are: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rachin Ravindra, Harry Brook—and also Cam Green. They are all outstanding players and have shown fantastic moments in all formats. They’re all young, and their games are still developing,” said Williamson.

According to Williamson, Gill, Brook, and Jaiswal are more experienced and better adapted to various conditions than a newer player like Rachin. He believes Ravindra still needs to find the right balance across all formats.

“I suppose the more you do it, the more lessons you learn. Ultimately, it’s an opportunity to try and understand how you want to approach it. Before you’re exposed to it at international level, you’re probably playing domestic cricket, which is generally scheduled in windows—first your red-ball competition, then perhaps your one-day competition, followed by the T20s. So there’s not a lot of quick crossover that really demands you to change your game and then switch back again,” Williamson explained.
