New Zealand batter Kane Williamson has not yet decided on his international future and will continue to assess his availability on a “series-by-series” basis.
The 35-year-old Kiwi stalwart is not part of New Zealand Cricket’s central contract system, instead holding a casual contract. Since signing it, Williamson and the board have worked together to determine which bilateral series and multi-nation events the former New Zealand skipper will feature in.
After a lengthy stint in England, Williamson missed the Zimbabwe and West Indies white-ball series before making his return in the three-match Test series, which New Zealand won 2-0.
“Yeah, it’s almost series by series, and like I say, after this there’s a pretty large block away from the group as well, and there’ll be more conversations,” Williamson said at a press conference in Mount Maunganui. “So we’ll just cross those bridges as we come, keeping the balance in mind, especially with a young family.”
Earlier this year, Williamson announced his retirement from T20 internationals, ruling him out of contention for the T20 World Cup. New Zealand will tour India for a white-ball series in January ahead of the World Cup, and Williamson is likely to miss the ODI leg of the tour.
“My position is still the same,” Williamson said. “It’s about balance. I’ve got a young family now, which takes a lot of my time and attention, but I’m still enjoying my cricket. As long as that remains the case, New Zealand Cricket have been really helpful and respectful of that.”
Williamson’s next assignment will be a stint with Durban’s Super Giants (DSG) in the SA20, which is the reason he is set to miss the ODI series in India.
