Former Sri Lankan cricketer Kaushal Silva has been appointed as the new head coach of Hong Kong’s national cricket team, the Cricket Hong Kong (CHK) announced on Monday, July 28.
Silva is a certified Level III coach having earned his accreditation from the ICC.
His appointment comes in the lead-up to the 2025 Asia Cup, where Hong Kong will open their campaign against Afghanistan on September 9. They will also face Bangladesh on September 11 and Silva’s native Sri Lanka on September 15.
Silva brings a rich playing background to the role. He featured in 39 Test matches for Sri Lanka between 2011 and 2018, scoring 2,099 runs at an average of 28.32, including three Test centuries. Over the course of his domestic career, he accumulated more than 10,000 runs in first-class cricket.
This marks Silva’s first major international coaching role. He previously had a brief coaching stint in England and has been based in Australia since 2019, most recently working with the Superkings Cricket Academy in Box Hill, Victoria. He now steps into the role left vacant by Simon Willis.
Speaking about his new position, Silva said: “I am excited to join Cricket Hong Kong, China, and I am looking forward to working with the talented group of players here. Hong Kong Cricket has a lot of potential, and I am eager to contribute to the team’s growth and success on the international stage. My focus will be on instilling a strong work ethic and a winning mentality amongst the senior squad and working to identify and nurture fresh talent for continued growth.”
Burji Shroff, Chairperson of Cricket Hong Kong, China, said Silva’s appointment aligns with the board’s developmental goals: “Kaushal’s commitment to developing talent fits perfectly with our long-term vision. We believe his experience and leadership can boost our competitive edge and also foster deeper engagement with the sport in our community.”
Hong Kong’s most recent outing was at the Asia Pacific Cricket Champions Trophy in Singapore, where they finished runners-up after a rain-affected final against Malaysia.
With Silva at the helm, the team will be looking to make a strong impression against top-tier opponents in the upcoming Asia Cup.
