Manchester City legend Kevin De Bruyne has announced that this will be his final season at the club. The Belgian playmaker, who has been an integral part of City’s dominance over the past decade, confirmed his departure on social media, marking the end of an era for the Premier League club.
De Bruyne, 33, has been a driving force behind City’s success since joining from VfL Wolfsburg in 2015. Over the years, he has amassed an impressive collection of silverware, including six Premier League titles and the coveted Champions League trophy in 2023. He has also been honoured twice as the Premier League Player of the Season, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s finest-ever midfielders.
In a heartfelt post, De Bruyne acknowledged the difficulty of saying goodbye to the club. “These will be my final months as a Manchester City player. This is not an easy decision, but it’s one that I have made with a lot of thought and reflection,” he wrote.
For months, speculation had surrounded De Bruyne’s future, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. Though still a vital part of City’s squad, injuries in recent seasons have limited his playing time. Despite the setbacks, he remains one of the most influential figures in the Premier League’s modern era.
City officially acknowledged his departure with an emotional statement, calling De Bruyne “one of the greatest players to ever play in the Premier League”. The club also confirmed that a tribute will be planned to honour his incredible contributions over the years.
During his time at City, De Bruyne has played 413 matches yet in all competitions, scoring 106 goals and providing 174 assists. His ability to dictate the game and create chances has earned him a place among the Premier League’s elite, with his 118 assists ranking second in the competition’s history — trailing only Ryan Giggs’.
Before he bids farewell, De Bruyne still has the opportunity to add another trophy to his already glittering cabinet. With City set to face Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup semi-finals on April 26, he could yet leave on a high, further cementing his legacy as one of the club’s all-time greats.
