Ricky Ponting, Parthiv Patel and Shashwat Goenka addressed the media at the IPL auction. The trio answered key questions about the proceedings.

Parthiv, the Gujarat Titans assistant coach, expressed satisfaction with their auction strategy. He stated, “Our plan was to invest in marquee players, and we are happy with the buys we have had so far.”

He was particularly enthusiastic about securing Jos Buttler, emphasising his versatility and leadership. “We are very happy to have Buttler in our side. He can bat at any position that suits the team’s balance. He’s also been a leader, which aids decision-making,” Parthiv said.

Buttler’s addition strengthens the Gujarat Titans’ line-up, with the seasoned opener known for his IPL consistency and prolific scoring ability. His presence undoubtedly enhances the team’s prospects for the upcoming season.

Ponting, head coach of Punjab Kings, revealed that the team had a well-defined strategy to target Shreyas Iyer in the auction, identifying him as a potential leader to stabilise their side. The Kings, often criticised for their lack of balance and squad cohesion, invested heavily, shelling out Rs 26.75 crore for Iyer — a move Ponting deemed worth every penny.

Ponting highlighted Iyer’s recent form in domestic cricket as a significant factor influencing their decision to go big on him. While rumours suggested the Kings might bid for Rishabh Pant, Ponting clarified that acquiring Iyer negated the need to pursue Pant.

Ponting praised Pant’s abilities, saying, “Everyone is aware of how good he is and what he can bring to the table. He is truly a dynamic player and adds a lot to any side he plays in.”

Goenka shared his thoughts during the press conference, expressing satisfaction with his franchise’s performance in the auction so far. He hinted at more exciting developments ahead, stating, “There is still a lot that is going to unfold in the auction.”
