Khalid Jamil says he is delighted at being handed the responsibility of India’s football coach for the senior men’s team.

Jamil will be the first Indian to coach this team since Savio Medeira in 2012. His first training camp will begin on August 15 in Bengaluru. Under his guidance, India will play in the CAFA Nations Cup, to be held in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan from August 29.

“I am deeply proud and immensely privileged to have been entrusted with the responsibility of leading our national team,” Jamil was quoted as saying in a media release from the All India Football Federation on Wednesday (August 13).

“Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to train Indian players, and I’ve grown to understand their strengths and weaknesses intimately. These insights will be fundamental to everything we do as we prepare for the CAFA Nations Cup and the upcoming crucial Asian Cup Qualifiers against Singapore.”

The AIFF has announced that Jamil will take charge on a two-year contract, which may be extended for another year.

Jamil has the experience of coaching in the I-League and ISL. He has managed clubs like Jamshedpur FC, Aizawl FC, NorthEast United FC, Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and Mumbai FC. He led Aizawl FC to a historic I-League title victory in 2016-17.

He last managed Jamshedpur FC, guiding the team to the 2025 Kalinga Super Cup final and to the semi-finals of the 2024-25 ISL play-offs.

The 48-year-old played 15 matches for the country. He was a midfielder and made his debut for the national team in the 1997 SAFF Championship. During his club career, Jamil won the National Football League, two Federation Cups, and two IFA Shields with Mahindra United. He also represented clubs like Air India and Mumbai FC.
