It was just 10 minutes or so into the second innings at Eden Gardens during the Kolkata Knight Riders versus Punjab Kings match that the sky turned all greyish yellow of the dust from the storm.

Sunil Narine and Rahamanullah Gurbaz had just stepped onto the pitch to chase a total of 201 set by the Kings. A chilly cold breeze from the corner of the Jhulan Goswami stand felt nice on this hot and humid night in Kolkata. Within 30 seconds, the sky turned dusty, people had to cover their noses and eyes and the umpires signalled to stop play.

The groundsmen rushed to cover the pitch but struggled to manage the covers — the wind was so strong. A cover flew as a parachute getting free from the two groundsmen who tried to hold it still.

The light drizzle felt it was likely to be a passing shower but nature had other plans. Fifteen minutes and it started raining cats and dogs. There was lightning as well.

Fans in doubt — whether to stay or book a cab, but they can’t leave the shed without getting drenched. It’s 10:30 pm as the piece is being written. Details to follow. Currently, it’s still pouring here at the Eden Gardens.
