According to reports, Virat Kohli has informed the Indian board that he is all set to retire from Test cricket. However, as per the Indian Express, the board’s administrators are trying to persuade him to take back the decision.
The Indian stalwart has been going through a bad patch in Test cricket in the recent past. The middle-order batter has accrued just 2028 runs at an average of 30.72 over his last 39 Tests. His overall Test average, too, has been on a downward slide, currently standing at 46.85. Kohli also failed to make an impression during the tour of 2024-25 tour of Australia, scoring 190 runs at an average of 23.75.
If Kohli retires in Test, then India will tour England with mostly an inexperienced batting unit
Kohli had said this to Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s official channel about his failure in Australia: “I might not have an Australia tour again in me in four years’ time.”
If Kohli announces retirement from the longest format, then India will tour England with mostly an inexperienced batting unit. The onus will be on KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant to shore up the batting order. A lot will also be expected out of Yashasvi Jaiswal. Incidentally, Rohit Sharma, who led India in 24 Tests, has also hung up his boots from that format.
