Multiple conversations have been heard in the Kolkata Maidan regarding Mumbai City FC’s defensive stalwart, Mehtab Singh. Although Mehtab still has one year left on his contract with the Islanders, both Kolkata giants — Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC — have identified him as a prime target to bolster their defensive line for the upcoming season.
Much like last summer’s transfer saga involving Lalengmawia Ralte (Apuia), where both arch-rivals locked horns off the pitch, a similar battle could be on the cards — this time for Mehtab. The 25-year-old has consistently been one of Indian football’s standout defenders. His versatility — being equally comfortable as a centre-back and right-back — has further increased his value in the transfer market.
Mohun Bagan view Mehtab as a reliable backup option after extending the contract of Tom Aldred, thus keeping their championship-winning central defensive pairing intact. While Mehtab might not walk straight into the starting XI at Bagan, his experience and adaptability make him a strong candidate to step in when required.
On the other hand, East Bengal, who struggled defensively last season, are eager to bring Mehtab on board as a key addition. With Anwar Ali battling injuries over the past year, the Red and Gold brigade are in dire need of dependable reinforcement. Should both Anwar and Mehtab stay fit, East Bengal will have the luxury of deploying a solid Indian defensive core, allowing them to push more foreign players into attacking roles.

There’s no doubt that Mehtab is currently one of the hottest properties in Indian football. A ball-playing defender who is comfortable using both feet, he can contribute to attacking build-ups from the back, maintain composure under pressure, and also pose a threat in the opposition box during set-pieces. His profile makes him a perfect fit for any team aiming for the title.
While Mehtab has enjoyed great success at Mumbai City FC — winning both the ISL Shield and Cup — there remains a sentimental connection with East Bengal. He is a product of the club’s academy and first rose to prominence with the senior East Bengal team during the Quess East Bengal era. After a loan stint with Gokulam Kerala, he began his successful journey with Mumbai.
Former East Bengal legend Alvito d’Cunha, who shares a close bond with Mehtab, believes the defender would be a fantastic addition to the squad.
“If Mehtab signs for East Bengal, there’s no doubt it will strengthen our defence,” Alvito said.
“Anwar and Mehtab would form a solid combination. Their presence would allow us to field more foreigners up front. With a player like Mehtab, the team will definitely be bolstered,” he added.
Whether Mehtab chooses to stay with Mumbai City FC — where he has already made a name for himself — or returns to his roots with East Bengal, remains to be seen. One thing is certain: his next move could significantly impact the balance of power in Indian football’s fiercest rivalry.
