India spinner Kuldeep Yadav added another feather to his cap on Friday during the Super Four match against Sri Lanka. The left-arm wrist-spinner set a new record for the most wickets taken in a single T20 Asia Cup edition. So far, across six matches, Kuldeep has claimed 13 wickets. The previous record was held by the UAE’s Amjad Javed, who took 12 wickets from seven matches in the 2016 edition of the tournament. India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar ranks third on the list, with 11 wickets from five matches in the 2022 edition.
Kuldeep reached the milestone with the wicket of Sri Lanka skipper Charith Asalanka, who attempted to clear long-on but ended up giving a straightforward catch to Shubman Gill on the boundary. That was his only wicket in the match, as he finished with figures of 1/31 from his four overs, at an economy rate of 7.80.
Lasith Malinga tops the charts for the most wickets taken in the Asia Cup (ODI and T20 editions combined). The Sri Lankan pacer has 33 wickets from 15 matches. Kuldeep now stands at 32 wickets from 17 matches, and has a golden opportunity to surpass Malinga on Sunday in the final of the Asia Cup 2025 against Pakistan.
Currently leading the tournament’s wicket-taking charts, Kuldeep is in superb form. The 30-year-old began with a four-wicket haul against the UAE, followed by three wickets against Pakistan. He then took 3/18 in the Super Four match against Bangladesh. His form has been one of the key factors in India’s remarkable run in the tournament.
