Teenage cricket sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been breaking records ever since his debut IPL season. After scoring a century in his first IPL campaign, he has continued to impress during the ongoing India U-19 tour of England.

Rajasthan Royals’ Director of Cricket Operations, Kumar Sangakkara, who is currently on broadcasting duties for the senior India vs England Test series, spoke about Suryavanshi’s journey and raw talent on Sky Sports.

“Vaibhav Suryavanshi had already shown himself to be a very special talent. In 2023, one of Rajasthan Royals’ analysts sent through a text saying, ‘There’s a very special player we need to watch, get to the trials and look to sign’,” Sangakkara shared.

The former Sri Lankan captain recalled the first time he saw Suryavanshi bat in person—during a practice session in Guwahati, after the Royals had already signed him. There, the youngster faced Jofra Archer and other seamers with remarkable ease.

“The first time I saw him live was after we had signed him, in the nets in Guwahati, batting against Jofra Archer and the other seamers that we had. And he made it look very, very easy. He had a lot of time,” Sangakkara said.

What stood out for Sangakkara was the combination of power, technique, and timing that Suryavanshi displayed in the IPL. “The sound off his bat was like a gunshot every single time he contacted the ball. His bat swing is lovely, it’s nice and wide outside the off-stump. And it’s very free-flowing. He’s got a lot of time, his movements are very, very simple and minimal, and he’s very enthusiastic about developing his shot repertoire,” Sangakkara observed.

“This Is Just the Start for Him”

Sangakkara believes that the youngster is tailor-made for T20 cricket and is only at the beginning of what promises to be an exciting career. “And he has all the shots that you want in a T20 batter. This is just the start for him. He will become even better, and hopefully, very, very special,” he concluded.
