Kylian Mbappe gave Real Madrid a 2-0 lead inside 14 minutes, and scored an El Clasico hat-trick, but Hansi Flick’s Barcelona stormed back to win 4-3 in a dramatic game at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic. Both sides had other strikes chalked off by VAR, and the result has more or less ensured that Barcelona will be LaLiga champions. With just three rounds of matches remaining, they now lead Real by seven points.

Real looked right back in the title race in the first quarter hour, especially when a rash challenge from Wojciech Szczesny on Mbappe have Real a penalty. Mbappe tucked it away, and less than 10 minutes later, he would have a second. Federico Valverde stole the ball off Lamine Yamal, and released Vinicius Junior, whose sublime outside-of-the-boot pass was controlled and then superbly curled in by Mbappe.

But such is the attacking talent that Barcelona possess that no lead is safe. After Thibaut Courtois had saved brilliantly from Yamal, Dani Olmo’s corner was glanced on by Ferran Torres for Eric Garcia to thump home. That was on 19 minutes. In the 32nd, Torres, boxed in by Real defenders, laid the ball off for Yamal to apply a sensational first-time finish past Courtois.

For Flick, a league-and-cup double in his first season is now all but certain

Almost right after Real had kicked off, Dani Ceballos and Mbappe bumped into each other. Pedri took the ball, and threaded an exquisite pass to Raphinha, whose shot past Courtois and into the far corner was geometrically precise. And Barcelona weren’t done. After Real had a goal overturned for offside by VAR, a horrible piece of control from Lucas Vasquez allowed Raphinha to score his second.

Carlo Ancelotti, in surely his final El Clasico as coach, substituted Arda Guler and Ceballos at half time, bringing on Brahim Diaz and Luka Modric. And it was Modric’s pass in the 70th minute that released Vinicius to square the ball for Mbappe to complete his hat-trick. But though both sides had further chances and VAR was kept busy, there were no more goals. For Flick, a league-and-cup double in his first season is now all but certain.
