Lalit Modi, the founder of Indian Premier League, took to Instagram, the social media platform, to express his delight on the tournament reaching its 1000-match milestone. The match between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Sunday will be IPL’s 1000th match, with the IPL now firmly established as the biggest T20 league in the world.
Captioning a video, Modi expressed his jubilation while also stating that when the tournament started in Bengaluru in 2008, no one had thought that it would achieve the status it has attained over the years. Modi also credited cricket fans for making IPL the most-watched sports league in the world. He shared glimpses of what makes IPL special – like Rahmanullah Gurbaz being caught by Rashid Khan with Noor Ahmad bowling, or Rinku Singh making headlines for smashing five sixes against Gujarat Titans to help Kolkata Knight Riders win.

The IPL has reached its 1000th game. It still feels the other day when it all started in Bengaluru. To be honest we had no idea what the journey had in store for us. And that’s why all the credit must go to the cricket fans of India and across the world for making the league what it is. They embraced it. They supported the players and today it is the most watched sports league in the world. In just 16 years it is the second most valued league and going forward it will indeed become the worlds leading sports property. To see Rahmanullah Gurbaz bowled Noor Ahmad and caught Rashid Khan tells you a story. That it has fulfilled aspirations and serves as inspiration for many. That we have players like Rinku Singh make headlines is proof the journey has been a very special one. As it’s founder I can look back with a lot of pride and vindication and once again would like to thank the fans and players who are the real heroes of the league.
What started as a thought became a dream
A vision that saw India emerge as a sports superpower
It’s the largest. The biggest. The greatest. But the most important contribution of the IPL is finding new talent. Giving everyone a chance to dream and work towards it.
Remember: IPL is the pride of India. IPL is 1000 today
IPL belongs to 1.42 billion
Jai hind. Thank u
