England offered a mix of Bazball and traditional cricket in the recent series against India. Up next for them is a tough tour of Australia. Former Australian cricketer Justin Langer feels England should play aggressive cricket in the Ashes series.

Speaking on the BBC Sounds’ For the Love of Cricket podcast, Langer explained why. “Call it Bazball or the aggressive approach, I think England must play that approach in Australia. Because it’ll put pressure back on,” he said.

“The only players who had success against Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath were those who attacked them. They got back in their face and they hated it because no one did it.”

The five-Test Ashes series starts on November 21. England failed to win a single Test on their last three tours of Australia. Langer said the task won’t be any easier this time.

“It’s going to take courage because you have got Mitchell Starc bowling like he does. Josh Hazlewood never misses the spot and Pat Cummins is a generational bowler. So it’s going to take great courage.”

At the same time, the former Australia coach believes it won’t be a one-sided series. “It’s going to be a really, really close series,” he predicted.

Langer pointed out that the last Ashes series in England as well as the recent series against India ended in 2-2 draws.

“My question for England will be, have you got the killer instinct to finish off a series if you get a chance? We’ve seen it, the two-all in the last Ashes series, two-all against India,” he concluded.
