Following the sudden retirement of Tamim Iqbal, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed Litton Das as the captain for the remaining matches of the ongoing ODI series against Afghanistan.
The decision was confirmed by BCB President Nazmul Hassan on Friday, who also expressed his dissatisfaction with the manner in which Tamim announced his retirement from international cricket.
The board will wait for Tamim to reconsider his retirement before announcing a regular captain for the team. In the meantime, Rony Talukder has been included in the ODI team as a replacement for Tamim.
Litton, who recently led Bangladesh to a record-breaking 546-run victory in a one-off Test match against Afghanistan in June, said that the team is focused on the future as they aim to level the series in the upcoming match.
“It’s difficult to say whether we will miss him. If I am injured today, the team will not miss me,” Liton Das stated to reporters ahead of the second ODI. “Newcomers will keep coming in the future. Someday, we will also depart. Since Tamim is not here, it’s best not to dwell on that topic,” he added.
The first ODI of the series took place on July 5, with the remaining two matches scheduled for July 8 and 11 in Chattogram. Following the ODI series, both teams will engage in a two-match T20I series in Sylhet.
