The English Premier League (EPL) is back, and if the opening weekend taught us anything, it’s that English football never eases you in gently. From tear-soaked tributes at Anfield to a fairytale at the Stadium of Light, the 2025/26 season has already lit its first set of fireworks.

Liverpool’s 4-2 win over Bournemouth wasn’t just about the scoreline – it was raw emotion. Still grieving the loss of Diogo Jota, the Kop rose to a chorus of song, and the players responded in kind. Hugo Ekitike opened his account early, Cody Gakpo added flair, and Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo stole hearts with a gutsy brace in the face of vile abuse from a spectator.

Then came the late show. Federico Chiesa’s 88th-minute strike was pure theatre, and when Mohamed Salah rifled home in stoppage time, he not only tied Andy Cole on the all-time charts but unveiled a shark-fin celebration…his tribute to Jota. Football, sometimes, writes its own scripts.

Manchester City’s 4-0 dismantling of Wolves was less a match, more a mission statement. Erling Haaland, inevitable as gravity, bagged two. But it was debutant Tijjani Reijnders who turned heads, dictating tempo, gliding past markers, and firing one into the bottom corner. Add Rayan Cherki’s thunderbolt and the silky cameos of Rico Lewis and Oscar Bobb, and you see Pep Guardiola’s next evolution: a team with one eye on immortality, and the other on 2030!

Eight years out of the big time, and Sunderland could have tiptoed back. Instead, they kicked the door down. A 3-0 blitz of West Ham sent the Black Cats into delirium. Eliezer Mayenda, Dan Ballard, and Wilson Isidor wrote their names into opening-day folklore, while Granit Xhaka bossed midfield like a man on a personal redemption arc.

Tottenham brushed Burnley aside 3-0 with Richarlison rediscovering samba swagger. Brighton and Fulham split the points in a frantic 1-1, while Villa and Newcastle played out a tactical arm-wrestle that nobody will rewatch.

Leeds’ return to the Premier League was Hollywood. Lukas Nmecha kept his nerve from the spot in the 84th minute to edge Everton 1-0. David Moyes raged at the handball decision, but Elland Road drowned in joy.

And then, the heavyweight clash: Arsenal nicked a 1-0 against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The stats – 61% possession, 22 shots for United – look generous, but their attack once again had all the menace of a butter knife.

Revsportz Match of the WeekLiverpool 4–2 Bournemouth

Drama, grief, and jubilation rolled into one at Anfield. Ekitike and Gakpo gave Liverpool lift-off, but Semenyo struck twice to stun the Kop. Then came the emotional finale: Chiesa on 88’, Salah in stoppage time with his shark-fin tribute to Jota. Football, at its purest, is about moments and Anfield delivered them all.

Revsportz Goal of the WeekRayan Cherki (Manchester City vs Wolves)
From the edge of the box, Cherki unleashed a thunderbolt that kissed the post on its way in. Haaland may hoard goals, but this was artistry – technique, audacity, and a strike that made even Guardiola leap off his bench.

The curtain has barely risen, but the Premier League has already dished out catharsis, chaos, and controversy. If this weekend was the appetiser, the main course promises to be unmissable. Buckle in.
