The West Indies are currently No. 8 in the ICC men’s Test team rankings. Former captain and legendary figure Clive Lloyd is worried about the team’s future if the International Cricket Council (ICC) implements a two-tier system, where teams in the lower rung play in a second division.

If it takes place, the West Indies won’t be able to compete against the top teams, like India, Australia, England and South Africa in the World Test Championship.

The West Indies were clean swept by Australia in a recent three-Test series. In one of those matches, they were all out for 27. They also lost the T20I series by 5-0.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Lloyd said he is worried that this team could get consigned to the lower tier for a long time.

“We have to look at what’s happening at the ICC with the share-out of the money,” he said. “India, Australia and England get 180 million, and West Indies will get 80 million like Bangladesh and Afghanistan, and we are just two years out of being in that group for 100 years.”

Lloyd urged the West Indies cricket board to stand up for the rights against ICC and demand for an exemption against the system. “To me, it’s not right. We have to stand up. We have to go to the ICC and ask for special dispensation. Because when we were in the ascendancy, and we were playing so well, everyone wanted to play with us”.
