Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) currently sit in seventh place on the points table with 10 points. What has been their biggest downfall this season? It’s their skipper, Rishabh Pant, who was the highest-priced player at the IPL 2025 auction. In the 12 matches played, including today, the batter-cum-wicketkeeper has managed to score just 135 runs.
Specifically in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Pant struggled once again, scoring only seven runs off six balls before being dismissed by SRH bowler Eshan Malinga. His lack of form throughout the season has significantly affected the team’s performance. However, LSG did find some positives in their hard-hitting batters. The opening partnership between Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh was impressive, followed by a solid innings from Nicholas Pooran.
Pant couldn’t live up to the expectations of the franchise
In a match which was crucial for LSG to inch closer to the playoffs, every team member was expected to step up. But Pant’s underwhelming innings was a major setback in the first half. His dismissal for just seven runs appeared to frustrate team owner Sanjiv Goenka, who was seen storming out of the stands immediately after Pant’s wicket. Cameras captured the moment of his visibly angry exit.
Given Pant’s underperformance this season, LSG’s selection strategy now faces serious scrutiny. The decision to invest such a hefty amount in a player like Pant is increasingly being seen as a costly error.
