Former England all-rounder Luke Wright has stepped down from his role as a men’s selector following the conclusion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which begins next month. Wright has held the position for a little more than three years, having been appointed in November 2022. England have failed to win bilateral series against major teams such as Australia and India, while also underperforming at ICC events.

The former England international said he wants to spend less time on the road in order to devote more time to his young family.

“It has been a true honour and privilege to serve as an England Men’s Selector over the past three years,” Wright said in a statement. “The role demands significant travel and time away from home, and with a young family, the time feels right to pass the baton on to the next person. I now look forward with real interest and enthusiasm to whatever cricketing roles the future may hold.”

ECB men’s managing director Rob Key thanked Wright for his service and praised his impact on England cricket as outstanding.

“I have absolutely loved working with Luke. His contribution to English cricket has been exceptional, and I trust his judgement as much as anyone. He has added so much more to this role than just being a selector. I’m very sad to see him go, and I wish him and his family all the best for the future,” Key said.

The roles of Key and head coach Brendon McCullum have been under scrutiny following the Ashes debacle. Further changes within the ECB are expected later this year.
