The Hundred franchise Manchester Originals is set to be renamed Manchester Super Giants from next season, following its acquisition by the RPSG Group, which also owns the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL and the Durban Super Giants in SA20.
According to a Cricbuzz report, the decision regarding the name change has been made, and the team will be known by its new name from next year.
Sanjiv Goenka, founder and chairman of the RPSG Group, acquired a stake worth £107 million in the Originals earlier this year. This was made possible after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided last year to privatise The Hundred and attract external investment. Manchester-based Originals became one of the first franchises to undergo such a transition, with the RPSG Group winning the bid ahead of two unnamed IPL franchises.
It still remains unclear whether the team will change its traditional black colours to the iconic blue of the Super Giants brand.
“We respect the legacy of Lancashire Cricket and we welcome Manchester Originals to our RPSG family,” said Sanjiv Goenka at the time of finalising the deal. “We are committed to developing a deep bond with the players, support team, and the wider community. We believe in excellence and see huge potential to deliver high-quality cricket for generations to come.”
While the men’s team finished runners-up in both 2022 and 2023, the women’s side is yet to qualify for the playoffs in the tournament’s history.
The Manchester Originals’ men’s and women’s teams will be in action next month, with the tournament scheduled to be played between 5–31 August.
