South African all-rounder Marco Jansen achieved the feat of becoming the first visiting batter to hit seven sixes in a Test innings in India during his knock of 93 against India in the ongoing second Test of the two-match series in Guwahati. The towering right-handed batter surpassed West Indies legend Sir Vivian Richards and Australian great Matthew Hayden to reach the milestone. Both former batters held the record of six sixes in a Test innings in India, with Richards and Hayden achieving it in 1974 and 2001, respectively.
Jansen also levelled with AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock for the most sixes in a Test innings by any South African batter. De Villiers did it while scoring 163 against Australia in Cape Town in 2009, while de Kock achieved the feat when he scored 141 against the West Indies in Gros Islet in 2021.
The 25-year-old also became the first South African player to be dismissed in the nineties while batting at No. 9 or below, and only the 11th player in the world to do so. He further became the second player to miss out on a century against India at that position, after Mitchell Starc’s knock of 99 in 2013.
In the ongoing Test, Jansen and Senuran Muthusamy added 97 runs off 106 balls for the eighth wicket. That partnership was instrumental in taking South Africa to 489 in their first innings. Jansen was fearless throughout his knock, attacking the Indian spinners. Apart from the sixes, his innings also included six fours.
