The stage is set for the ISL 2024-25 Final as Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) are getting ready to face Bengaluru FC (BFC) tomorrow at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. Ahead of the big clash, both teams’ captains and coaches attended the pre-match press conference, where BFC captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu addressed the recent buzz around MBSG goalkeeper Vishal Kaith.

In India’s last two international matches — against the Maldives in a friendly and Bangladesh in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifier — Gurpreet was dropped from the starting XI, with Vishal starting in goal. While India won against Maldives, the team struggled in a goalless draw against a lower-ranked Bangladesh side. After that game, Gurpreet posted a cryptic message on social media that read, “there is a difference”. Many fans took it as a dig at Vishal, especially since the MBSG ‘keeper was involved in a couple of errors during that match.

The post sparked criticism, with fans calling it unprofessional, especially from a senior national team player. Now, as the two goalkeepers face off in the ISL Final, there’s been a lot of attention.

“We all are focusing on the game and everything else is just a noise,” said Gurpreet

When asked about the situation, he responded calmly: “You can not control social media, what people think when it comes to contents and other stuff. I absolutely adore Vishal and how he is. He is a great professional and a great ‘keeper as well. So, for me and for the team, there is nothing else that is going on in our heads. We all are focusing on the game and everything else is just a noise. We just need to focus on football.” BFC head coach Gerard Zaragoza praised the team’s unity, saying: “We are ready for the final and we have reached this stage because of team effort.”

On the other side, MBSG head coach Antonio López Habas looked confident about his side’s chances. “We are motivated to win the cup as well. We respect Bengaluru. They will be a tough opponent but I have my plans.” Captain Subhasish Bose, who was part of last year’s ISL final where MBSG lost to Mumbai City FC, added: “We will try not to commit the mistakes we made in the final last season.”
