The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has introduced the Eknath Solkar Award for the emerging office cricketer, as its Apex Council held a meeting with representatives of office clubs. The award, named after India’s greatest-ever short-leg fielder, will recognise a promising young office cricketer “who displays talent, discipline, and the potential to grow into a complete team player”.
The MCA reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening office cricket and instituted the Fund for Advancement of Cricketing Excellence (FACE) in honour of former Mumbai Ranji Trophy captain Milind Rege. The fund is dedicated to promoting cricket excellence and nurturing talent. The MCA also decided to extend financial assistance of Rs 10,000 per match to its affiliated office clubs.

Speaking on the occasion, MCA president Ajinkya Naik said: “Office cricket has always been more than just a platform for competition; it has provided players with much-needed job security and stability in their lives, enabling them to pursue the game with confidence. Over the years, many players who went on to represent Mumbai and India first proved themselves by performing in office club cricket. By introducing these initiatives, MCA is proud to honour the contributions of legends like Milind Rege and Eknath Solkar, while also ensuring that the tradition of office cricket continues to flourish and provide opportunities for generations to come.”
MCA secretary Abhay Hadap said: “Our Apex Council members are proactive in strengthening both maidan club cricket and office club cricket. By organising over 100 tournaments in a season, we are ensuring that cricketing talent at every level has the right platform to compete, progress, and excel.”
