The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has confirmed that the run-out decision against Pakistan batter Muneeba Ali was correct in the match against India in Colombo during the ongoing ICC Women’s ODI World Cup.

“This law, which was introduced in 2010 and is sometimes referred to as the ‘bouncing bat law’, is designed to protect a batter who inadvertently loses contact with the ground while moving towards the stumps — either with their bat bouncing up or with both feet becoming airborne during the natural process of running,” the MCC stated. “It does not protect a batter who is turning for another run, overbalancing, or who — as in Muneeba’s case — simply lifts their bat into the air. The third umpire was entirely correct to give this out.”

Muneeba’s run-out sparked controversy across the cricketing world. The opener was dismissed in a strange turn of events. She was rapped on the pads by a delivery from Kranti Goud. India appealed for LBW, but the on-field umpire turned it down. In the meantime, Deepti Sharma threw the ball at the stumps, and Muneeba’s bat was in the air. As the ball was still in play, the TV umpire adjudged her out.

Both the batter and the Pakistan camp were visibly frustrated by the decision. Pakistan’s captain, Fatima Sana, even spoke to Kim Cotton, who was the fourth umpire.

It was another controversy-marred game that India ultimately won by 88 runs, handing Pakistan their second consecutive defeat of the tournament.
