The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the new captain of the national ODI side for the next 12 months. His first assignment as full time captain will be the upcoming three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka, starting on 2 July.

Mehidy replaces Najmul Hossain Shanto, who led the side in 13 ODIs, winning only four. Mehidy has previously captained the team in four matches in Shanto’s absence and now takes over the role full-time.

Nazmul Abedeen, Chairman of the BCB’s Cricket Operations Committee, highlighted Mehidy’s all-round consistency and leadership qualities as reasons behind the decision. “Miraz has consistently contributed with both bat and ball, and he brings energy and determination to the team. His temperament and maturity make him the right choice to guide the side through this transitional phase,” Abedeen said.

He also acknowledged Shanto’s efforts, saying, “We appreciate the positivity and leadership he brought to the role. Shanto remains an integral part of the leadership group, and his batting continues to be vital for the team.”

Responding to his new role, Mehidy said, “Captaining the national team is a huge honour. I’m thankful to the Board for placing their trust in me. This team has great potential—we’ll aim to play fearless and confident cricket while always giving our best for the nation.”

With this change, Bangladesh now have different captains across all three formats. Litton Das was recently appointed T20I captain after Shanto stepped down, while Shanto continues to lead the Test side.
