The Melbourne Renegades have signed their all-rounder Hayley Matthews on a two-year deal ahead of the Big Bash Draft for WBBL|11. One of the key players in winning the WBBL|10 championship title, this will be Matthews’ fourth season as part of the team, and she will be staying for two years.
Currently the world’s top-ranked T20I all-rounder, Matthews’ last season was a promising one. As a batter, she scored a total of 324 runs at a strike rate of 130.6, and on the bowling side, she was successful in taking 14 wickets.
Because of her stats, she earned her place in the WBBL|10 Team of the Tournament for the first time with five votes. She also earned the second spot in the “Total Impact” index of ESPNcricinfo, behind Sydney Sixers club player Ellyse Perry.
The star player is, however, eager to join the team for the fourth time and successfully try to defend their title. “Lifting that trophy was special. Now I want to defend it,” says Matthews.

“Melbourne is a second home to me” – Matthews on returning to the Renegades
In the finals game against the Brisbane Heat at the MCG, Matthews’ 69 (61) and a 2-24 performance earned her the Player of the Match award that gave the Renegades their maiden WBBL win.
“Melbourne is a second home to me and the Renegades give me the freedom to back in my own game and influence with the bat, ball and in the field – and I can’t wait to run it back with this group,” said Matthews.
“Hayley sets the tone in every phase — fearless batting, power-play wickets, calm leadership. Keeping her in red gives us real momentum heading into WBBL|11,” said WBBL head coach Simon Helmot on retaining Matthews.
The 27-year-old West Indies player is currently on a roll in the ongoing white-ball tour of England. Matthews scored a century in 67 balls in the opening game of the T20I, followed by a thrilling 71-run performance and a 3-32 strike as a bowler in the third game.
