Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill cited poor death-over bowling and missed chances in the field as key factors behind his team’s 20-run defeat to Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2025 Eliminator, held in Mullanpur on Friday, May 30.
In the final five overs of MI’s innings, GT conceded 68 runs, with the last over alone leaking 22. Despite a strong penultimate over, the late surge allowed MI to post a daunting 228, which GT fell short of in the chase. Gill also pointed to three dropped catches, including crucial ones of Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav—both spilled by debutant Kusal Mendis.
“The last three to four overs didn’t go our way, but it was still a good contest,” Gill said after the match. “It’s tough for bowlers when we drop three sitters—it doesn’t help the cause.”
GT had looked formidable during the league stage, with a strong top order featuring Gill, Jos Buttler, and Sai Sudharsan. However, their bowling unit struggled in the latter part of the tournament, with key players like Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Rashid Khan struggling for form.
“There are plenty of positives to take. The last two to three games didn’t go as planned, but credit to all the players. Sai, in particular, had an outstanding season,” Gill added.
Gill himself had a rare failure in the Eliminator, scoring just one before falling leg-before to Trent Boult. Still, the GT skipper finished the season with an impressive 650 runs in 15 matches, averaging 50 with a strike rate of 155.87. The newly-appointed India Test captain will now be seen in action in England in the five-match Test series.
