The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed the appointment of Mike Hesson as the new head coach for the white-ball teams. The former New Zealand coach will officially take charge on May 26. While the duration of his contract hasn’t been disclosed, he succeeds Aqib Javed, who had been serving in an interim capacity for the past five months.
Meanwhile, Aqib has been named the new High-Performance Director and will retain a voice in the national selection process.
Hesson brings a wealth of coaching experience to the role. He was at the helm of the New Zealand men’s team from 2012 to 2018, a tenure during which the side enjoyed considerable success, including a historic run to the ICC World Cup final in 2015. The New Zealander has also held coaching responsibilities with Kenya in the past.
In franchise circuit, Hesson is no stranger to high-pressure environments, having been part of the leadership group with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and previously with Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed confidence in Hesson’s ability to guide Pakistan’s white-ball teams back to international prominence.
“It’s a pleasure to welcome Mike Hesson to the Pakistan cricket setup,” Naqvi said in a statement. “He brings a strong international background and a proven record of building competitive teams. We’re hopeful that his leadership will help rejuvenate our white-ball cricket and bring success in the years ahead.”
His first series in charge of Pakistan is expected to be the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh, though the exact dates remain subject to change.
