World Boxing Cup Astana silver medallist Minakshi delivered another commanding performance to secure India’s fourth medal at the World Boxing Championships 2025 in Liverpool. On Friday, the 24-year-old from Rohtak, Haryana, outclassed England’s Alice Pumphrey in the women’s 48kg quarterfinals to guarantee herself a place on the podium.

Using her superior reach and sharp movement, Minakshi controlled the contest right from the opening bell and never allowed her younger opponent a chance to settle. She was rewarded with a unanimous 5-0 verdict. With this victory, she joined compatriots Nupur (women’s 80+kg), Jaismine Lamboria (women’s 57kg), and Pooja Rani (women’s 80kg) in the semifinals, further strengthening India’s presence at the tournament.

India has sent a 20-member squad to the inaugural World Championships, being staged under the banner of World Boxing — the newly formed governing body for the sport.

Meanwhile, in the men’s 50kg division, young Jadumani Singh Mandengbam faced a stern challenge against former world champion and two-time Asian champion Sanzhar Tashkenbay of Kazakhstan. Despite showing great determination in his maiden world championships appearance, the 21-year-old Indian fell short, losing 0-4 to the seasoned campaigner.

The action continues later in the day with two of India’s semifinalists eyeing a spot in the final. In the women’s 57kg category, Jaismine will go up against Paris Olympian Omailyn Carolina Alcala Cegovia of Venezuela, while Nupur is set for a rematch with Turkey’s Seyma Duztas in the women’s 80+kg division. The pair last met in the Astana World Boxing Cup semifinals, where Nupur had prevailed convincingly with a 5-0 win.
