Mithun Manhas files nomination for BCCI president

Candidates after filing their nominations.

Mithun Manhas, the BCCI’s president-designate filed his nomination for the post at the cricket board’s headquarters in Mumbai on Sunday. The former Delhi captain will represent Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association at the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting on September 28.

Along with him, other candidates too submitted their nominations, with Sunday being the cut-off date. They have until Tuesday to withdraw their nominations.

Manhas being picked as a unanimous choice as the next BCCI president at a meeting of the decision-makers in Delhi on Saturday evening came as a surprise. He has been working in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association of late, but this is a wild-card entry to the top post of Indian cricket.

“A new body is being formed for the next term. Mithun Manhas is a former player and it has been decided to make him the president,” BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said. He was here to file his nomination and will continue in the same capacity.

Devajit Saikia will continue as the cricket board secretary, but the treasurer’s post is going to former India spinner and the current Karnataka State Cricket Association president Raghuram Bhat. Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, the incumbent treasurer, will be the joint-secretary in the new term. Jaydev Shah, the son of former BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah and the current Saurashtra Cricket Association president, will be in the Apex Council. Arun Dhumal will continue as the IPL chairman. Mamon Majumdar will be in the IPL Governing Council.

Meanwhile, Saikia confirmed that the Indian team for the upcoming two-Test series against the West Indies will be picked either on September 23 or 24.

This is how the new BCCI hierarchy will look:

Mithun Manhas – president

Devajit Saikia – secretary

Rajeev Shukla – vice-president

Raghuram Bhat – Treasurer

Prabhtej Singh Bhatia – joint-secretary

Arun Dhumal – IPL chairman

Jaydev Shah – Apex Council

Mamon Majumdar – IPL Governing Council
