In a major blow for the MI New York, all-rounders Rashid Khan and Azmatullah Omarzai are all set to miss the entirety of the 2025 edition of Major League Cricket (MLC).
According to ESPN Cricinfo, Rashid has withdrawn from the league, which begins this Friday, in order to take a break from cricket. The decision follows a disappointing IPL 2025 campaign with Gujarat Titans, who were knocked out in the Eliminator by Mumbai Indians. The leg-spinner endured his least effective IPL season to date, managing just nine wickets at a steep economy rate of 9.34 and an average of 57.11. This marked the first time since his debut in 2017 that he failed to reach double figures in the wicket column.
Omarzai, who was expected to make his MLC debut for MI New York, has also decided to step away from the tournament, further weakening the squad.
In last year’s MLC season, Rashid was among the top performers for his side, claiming 10 wickets at an average of 6.15. Despite his individual success, MI New York finished fourth, managing only two victories from seven matches.
Naveen, Noor & Waqar set for MLC action
Meanwhile, other Afghan cricketers will feature in this year’s competition: Naveen-ul-Haq will represent MI New York, Noor Ahmad joins Texas Super Kings, and Waqar Salamkheil will turn out for Seattle Orcas. All three players have already linked up with their respective franchises.
However, uncertainty looms over the participation of Gulbadin Naib and Fazalhaq Farooqi—both contracted to the Seattle Orcas—who are still awaiting visa clearance, reportedly due to a recent US travel ban affecting Afghan nationals. An exception to the restriction exists for athletes participating in major events such as the World Cup, Olympics, or other internationally recognised competitions, as determined by the US Secretary of State.
The 2025 MLC season begins with a high-profile clash between Washington Freedom and San Francisco Unicorns. MI New York will face Texas Super Kings in their tournament opener on 14 June.
