The Seattle Orcas have parted ways with head coach Matthew Mott midway through the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season. The decision comes on the back of a dismal start to the campaign, with the team languishing at the bottom of the points table without a single win in five matches. The franchise confirmed the move in an official statement, citing “differences in coaching and management strategies”.
In another major development, captain Heinrich Klaasen has stepped down from his leadership role to focus solely on his batting. The captaincy has now been handed over to experienced all-rounder Sikandar Raza.

“This is a moment of reflection and renewal for the Seattle Orcas,” said team CEO Hemant Dua. “It has been a tough run for the team, and with that, some difficult decisions had to be made. We are grateful to Matthew for his commitment and professionalism during his time with us, and we wish him all the very best in his future endeavours.”
Dua also expressed support for Klaasen’s decision, saying, “We respect Heinrich’s choice to step down voluntarily as captain to focus on his batting. It reflects his character and team-first mindset. Sikandar was our unanimous choice once Klaasen informed us of his decision. We believe these changes lay the foundation for a strong second half of the season.”
After reaching the final in 2023 and finishing last in 2024, the Orcas are now desperate to turn their fortunes around in what has been another disappointing season so far.
