The long-running Mohamed Salah contract situation appears to finally be nearing a conclusion with Liverpool’s star Egyptian winger set to sign an extension through to 2027. In a further boost for the club, who are currently 11 points clear of Arsenal in the English Premier League (EPL) with just seven rounds of matches left to play, Virgil van Dijk, the captain, is also set to sign on the dotted line till 2027. Fenway Sports Group (FSG), who own Liverpool, don’t usually hand out extensions to players well into their 30s, but the sustained excellence of the duo has promoted a rethink. The Salah stats for 2024-25 are simply mind-boggling, with 32 goals and 22 assists in just 45 outings.
The last month has seen a bit of a dip, with Liverpool going out on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16, and then losing the Carabao Cup final to Newcastle United. A 3-2 defeat to Fulham last Sunday was their first in the league since September, but it’s hard to see them stumbling when so close to a record-equalling 20th top-flight title.
Salah intends to reinforce his status as a modern-day club legend second only to Steven Gerrard
Salah arrived at Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017, and has since scored an incredible 243 goals for the club in 394 appearances. His one-time partners in the forward line, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, both now play in Saudi Arabia and the kingdom’s top clubs have been dangling a blank cheque in Salah’s direction for a couple of seasons now.
But with his fitness the envy of those a decade younger and the goal output as prolific as ever, Salah doesn’t want to exchange the bright lights of Anfield, and the iconic status he enjoys among the fans, for the anonymity of the Saudi league. Arne Slot and the recruitment team will undoubtedly strengthen the squad in summer, and Salah intends to reinforce his status as a modern-day club legend second only to Steven Gerrard.
