Former Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful has been appointed as the senior men’s team batting coach ahead of the upcoming home series against Ireland.
Ashraful will replace Mohammad Salahuddin, who has been overseeing the batting unit since David Hemp parted ways with the team. The former Bangladesh batter will join the squad for the first time since being banned in 2014 for match-fixing offences.
Earlier this year, Ashraful won the Global Super League title as the batting coach of the Rangpur Riders and most recently served as the head coach of Barishal Division in the NCL T20.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director Abdur Razzak confirmed the appointment of his former teammate.
“Ashraful has the experience — that’s a given. He has already completed the coaching courses, and mainly his experience was the key factor for us in this role,” Razzak told reporters at a press conference in Dhaka after the board meeting at the SBNS.
Razzak further stated that Salahuddin would be fulfilling the role of senior assistant coach. “Salahuddin bhai is the senior assistant coach. There wasn’t any discussion about anyone failing to do their job or anything like that. And no one has been sacked from their post,” he added.
Meanwhile, Razzak will serve as Bangladesh’s team director for the upcoming series.
“My role will be like any other team director’s role. I will observe, keep an eye on things, and if anyone needs any help, I’ll provide it. If they need anything, I’ll try to help,” he said.
These changes follow a T20I series whitewash at the hands of the West Indies at home.
Ireland will tour Bangladesh later this month for two Tests and three T20Is.
