The uncertainty over Mohammedan Sporting Club’s participation in the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) is expected to be resolved soon. Following a financially turbulent season, the Shrachi Group severed ties with the club, leaving it in a state of disarray. Mohammedan SC endured a forgettable campaign, finishing at the bottom of the ISL table amidst salary dues and multiple controversies.

Issues ranging from unpaid wages to players and coaches to internal conflicts between the investor group and the club’s management severely impacted on-field performances. Since the conclusion of the previous ISL, the club has been actively seeking new investors to bring financial stability ahead of the next season.

According to sources close to the club, Md Sporting are in advanced negotiations with a consortium— an association of two companies —who are expected to come on board as investors for the upcoming season.

“Talks are at an advanced stage with two companies who are expected to join hands with Mohammedan Sporting for the coming seasons. Hopefully, the deal will be finalised within a week,” a source within the club confirmed to RevSportz.

However, the club continues to face major challenges. A FIFA-imposed transfer ban has been placed on the club, prohibiting them from registering players both nationally and internationally. The ban is a result of outstanding financial obligations towards Uzbek midfielder Mirjalol Qosimov. Furthermore, additional sanctions are expected as the club is yet to settle dues with former head coach Andrey Chernyshov and several other players who have approached FIFA.

Keeping these liabilities in mind, Mohammedan SC have reportedly laid out all financial obligations on the table during investor negotiations. Sources indicate that the incoming investors will be responsible for clearing all pending dues before initiating any investment in team building and operations for the upcoming season.

“All financial liabilities have been factored into the deal with the new investors. We have made full disclosure of the past dues,” a club official revealed.

Despite the ongoing challenges, Mohammedan SC are one of six ISL clubs confirmed to participate in the upcoming edition of the Durand Cup. The club will field an all-Indian squad in the prestigious tournament, supplemented by a few additions from their current CFL team. The foreign signings for the ISL campaign will be made once the investor deal is finalised.

As per the tentative schedule of the Durand Cup, Mohammedan SC have been drawn in the same group as Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Diamond Harbour FC.
