Mohun Bagan face tricky Tajik task against Ravshan in ACL 2 opener

Mohun Bagan Super Giants will lock horns with Tajikistan’s FC Ravshan in their AFC ACL 2 opener. After narrowly missing out on the Durand Cup title and drawing their ISL opener against Mumbai City FC, José Molina’s side will aim for a strong start in this prestigious competition, now revamped from the erstwhile AFC Cup.

The Mariners’ best finish on the Asian stage came in 2022, when they bowed out following a 3-1 defeat to Kuala Lumpur City FC in the inter-zonal semi-final. Despite being drawn into a tough group this year, the Kolkata club is determined to make its mark in the newly restructured competition.

However, the biggest challenge for Molina will be the uncertainty surrounding two key foreign players for this crucial clash. Alberto Rodríguez, who picked up a muscle injury against Mumbai City, has yet to fully recover. The towering defender missed the final training session before the game. Likewise, five-time A-League Golden Boot winner Jamie Maclaren is expected to be in the squad, but he hasn’t regained full match fitness after a neck injury disrupted his pre-season preparations.

On the other hand, Ravshan will have all seven of their foreign players available. While the Tajikistan league limits teams to fielding five foreigners due to domestic regulations, Ravshan will take advantage of the AFC’s lifted restrictions, allowing them to play all seven foreign players. Ravshan finished as runners-up in the Tajikistan League last season and lifted the Tajik Super Cup in 2023.

Ravshan’s interim coach, Mami Nazarzaden, seems to be aware of Indian football and Mohun Bagan’s recent performances.

“I am aware of Indian football. We’ve analysed it and seen the results. I’ve kept myself informed, especially about Mohun Bagan, over the past five years,” said Nazarzaden in a press conference.

Despite Molina downplaying his team’s defensive issues, Alberto’s potential absence could force the Spanish coach to rethink his backline, as he often prefers a three-man defence.

“I don’t agree that our defence is poor. We’ve been doing well, but at certain moments, we’ve made mistakes that have cost us,” Molina remarked.

While defence has been a concern, Mohun Bagan’s attack has been in fine form, netting 19 goals in their last six matches. Playing at home, in front of their passionate fans at Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Molina will look to capitalise on the home advantage to kick-start their AFC campaign on a positive note.

Players to Watch

Samuel Ofori (FC Ravshan)The Ghanaian defender has been a standout performer. He was named the best player in the Tajikistan League last season. His solid presence and defensive skills could pose significant challenges for Mohun Bagan’s attackers.

Bakhtiyor Zaripov (FC Ravshan)A powerful centre forward, he has been the top-scorer for Ravshan in the league with five goals. He’ll be aiming to bring his goal-scoring form to the AFC competition.

Jason Cummings (Mohun Bagan Super Giants)The Australian forward has picked up right where he left off last season. His hunger for goals and sharp instincts in the box make him a constant threat to any defence. With four goals in the recently concluded Durand Cup, Cummings will be a key figure in Mohun Bagan’s attack.

Greg Stewart (Mohun Bagan Super Giants)

Mohun Bagan’s star forward Dimitri Petratos is yet to find his lethal form this season, and new signing Greg Stewart will be tasked with leading the charge. Stewart’s ability to create opportunities, take set-pieces, and find space in the opponent’s half makes him a crucial player in Mohun Bagan’s midfield.

Coaches’ Comments

José Molina (Mohun Bagan Super Giants)

“They might have three African players and physical superiority, but we’re confident in our own players. We believe in their abilities, and we’re aiming for all three points.”

Mami Nazarzaden (FC Ravshan)

“They (Mohun Bagan) have only played one game (in the ISL). They are fresh and in top condition, while we are in the middle of our league. We are a bit more fatigued than they are.”
