Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) have finally done it. They have now won their maiden ISL double (ISL Shield plus ISL Cup) after beating Bengaluru FC 2-1 in extra time. This historic victory came in front of their passionate home crowd at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. More than 59,000 fans witnessed the moment when Jamie Maclaren put one past Gurpreet Singh Sandhu — a goal that turned out to be the winner. When the final whistle blew, the whole stadium erupted in joy and fireworks lit up the sky.

With this win, the Mariners ended their season unbeaten at home. A big reason behind their strong home record has been their loyal supporters. The stadium atmosphere was electric. Even before the kick-off, fans were full of confidence, chanting ‘Joy Mohun Bagan’ outside the gates. Around 4:30 pm, nearly three hours before the game, fans at the nearby metro stations were singing Mohun Bagan-related songs and shouting slogans for individual players.

Many fans stood out — one was spotted with a handmade green and maroon prawn and boat, while another held a unique placard. It read on the lines – Mohun Bagan had reached the final after more than seven months of hard work, and his wife told him to come home only if he helped the team win by supporting them—otherwise, no entry. That is the level of passion Mohun Bagan’s fans have for their club.

From kids to senior citizens, fans of all ages filled the stands. The one thing they all had in common was their love for Mohun Bagan. When BFC took the lead, courtesy of an unfortunate own goal by Alberto Rodriguez, the away fans made their voices heard with loud “BFC, BFC” chants, while the home crowd fell silent. The visitors dominated the first half, and their fans showed their strength during that spell.

But the Mariners did not give up. After the goal, players like Ashique Kuruniyan and Sahal Abdul Samad came on and changed the flow of the game. Their energy lifted the team, and the fans came back to life. After the equaliser from Jason Cummings’ penalty, with every attack, every block, every tackle, and every save, the crowd roared, making it clear to BFC that this was Mohun Bagan’s home — the home of champions — and visitors were not welcome.
