Following the contentious walkover against Iran’s Sepahan, Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) received harsh punishment from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), including a one-season ban from AFC competitions. The club’s decision to call off the game constituted a major violation of competition rules, according to the AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Committee.
The Mariners were fined $50,000 and required to reimburse Sepahan $50,729 (a combined financial burden of nearly ₹91 lakh) for losses resulting from the incident, and were “disqualified from participating in the next AFC club competition for which they would otherwise qualify, with the ban remaining effective up to and including the 2027–28 season”.
The committee’s decision to forfeit all subsidies associated with Mohun Bagan’s participation in the 2025–26 AFC Champions League Two, including participation fees, performance-based bonuses, and travel subsidies, was another major setback.
The MBSG management claim that the case is currently pending before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, where Mohun Bagan have contested the AFC’s ruling and are hoping for a favourable outcome. The ultimate result remains unknown until the CAS makes a decision.
Regardless of the ongoing appeal, the AFC order stipulates that the fine and compensation must be paid within 30 days. The CAS decision in the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Mohun Bagan’s continental future can be saved or if the ban will remain in effect.
