Mohun Bagan Super Giant dominated their city rivals, Mohammedan SC, with a commanding 4-0 win at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season.

Braces from Subhasish Bose and Manvir Singh dismantled the Mohammedan SC defence as the Mariners extended their lead at the top of the table to 10 points. They now sit on 43 points, ahead of second-placed FC Goa, who have 33. The match also marked a milestone for Vishal Kaith, who became the first goalkeeper to register 50 ISL clean sheets.

First-Half Dominance

Mohun Bagan SG started with intensity, pushing Mohammedan SC’s defence early. Their pressure paid off in the 12th minute when Liston Colaco’s corner led to a goal. Jamie Maclaren held up play before setting up Dippendu Biswas, whose shot found Subhasish Bose in the right position to finish past goalkeeper Padam Chhetri. It was Bose’s fifth goal of the season, surpassing his tally from all previous ISL campaigns combined.

Eight minutes later, Manvir Singh doubled the lead. Jason Cummings delivered a pinpoint corner to the near post, and Manvir reacted quickest, heading the ball past Padam before he could respond.

Mohun Bagan SG nearly added a third when Cummings made a strong run down the left and squared the ball for Maclaren, but Florent Ogier made a crucial interception to deny the chance.

Carlos Franca attempted to spark Mohammedan SC into life with a few promising runs, but the Mariners’ defence held firm. However, just before half-time, Cummings’ free-kick found Maclaren, who deftly set up Bose for his second goal of the night.

Mohammedan SC’s best chance in the first half came from a corner delivered by Mirjalol Kasimov, but Manvir Singh Saini’s header was tipped over by Kaith. The hosts’ troubles worsened when Kasimov, frustrated, lashed out at Tom Aldred while he was on the ground. The referee spotted the incident and sent him off just before the break.

Second-Half Action

Early in the second half, Alexis Gomez nearly scored from a free-kick just outside the box. Later, Cummings’ free-kick was fumbled by Padam, and Manvir almost pounced on the loose ball before Mohammedan SC defenders cleared it. However, Manvir struck again in the 53rd minute, heading home Cummings’ excellent cross from the left.

Mariners in Control

Jose Molina made changes, bringing on Dimitrios Petratos and Abhishek Suryavanshi for Manvir and Sahal Abdul Samad. As the game progressed, Mohun Bagan SG dictated the tempo, with Cummings central to their attacking moves.

In the 74th minute, Petratos tested Padam after a brilliant pass from Liston Colaco. Padam saved the initial effort, but Maclaren pounced on the rebound, only for Ogier to block his shot.

The Mariners created several more chances but lacked a clinical edge. Nevertheless, they secured their 13th win of the season while recording their 11th clean sheet.
