Mohun Bagan SG’s star duo Sahal Abdul Samad and Ashique Kuruniyan are set to be part of the squad for the upcoming Kalinga Super Cup. The Keralite duo came off the bench in the ISL Final, replacing Liston Colaco and Anirudh Thapa, and provided the much-needed spark that helped the team overturn a 1-0 deficit to clinch a 2-1 victory and lift the ISL Cup.

As per reports, Sahal and Ashique will be among the few first-team players from Mohun Bagan’s ISL squad selected for the Super Cup campaign. The Mariners will be coached by Bastab Roy for the tournament, with developmental team coach Deggie Cardozo serving as his assistant.

Mohun Bagan will begin their preparations for the tournament on April 17, with a squad comprising a mix of senior players and 8-9 youngsters from the developmental side, which recently emerged as champions of the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL).

Among the senior players, Glan Martins, Abhishek Suryavanshi, Deepak Tangri, Suhail Bhat, Dipendu Biswas, and a few others are expected to feature. In the goalkeeping department, Dheeraj Singh is likely to be the first-choice goalkeeper, with Arsh Anwar Shaikh as the backup.

Among the foreign contingent, only Nuno Reis will be part of the squad. The Portuguese defender is yet to make his debut for the Mariners. From the developmental side, promising talents like Pasang Dorjee Tamang, Taison Singh, and Amandeep Vrish Bhan will be key players to watch out for.

Mohun Bagan was initially scheduled to face Churchill Brothers in their opening match of the Super Cup. However, due to dissatisfaction with the I-League seeding process, the Goan club has decided to pull out of the tournament. An official confirmation from the AIFF is still awaited. If Churchill Brothers’ withdrawal is confirmed, Mohun Bagan will receive a bye and directly progress to the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of the East Bengal vs Kerala Blasters clash.
