For the longest time the Mohun Bagan supporters opposed the name ATK Mohun Bagan. For close to two years, we have seen protests and opposition to the prefix ATK. The RPSG Group led by Dr Sanjeev Goenka, principal owner of Mohun Bagan Super Giants decided to do away with the ‘ATK’ prefix and on the night when the then ATK Mohun Bagan lifted the ISL Trophy, Dr. Goenka announced the club’s name to be Mohun Bagan Super Giants from the upcoming season.
The supporters were delighted with the decision that ATK was done away with and it would be Mohun Bagan at the start of the name.
Yesterday, the Mohun Bagan Super Giants also published their new logo, but in front of the Argentine superstar goalkeeper Emi Martinez it was ATK Mohun Bagan on the giant screen.
It was the same for their arch rivals East Bengal. It was SC East Bengal’s logo side by side of ATKMB’s, which is also the old logo from the Sree Cement era. It is now East Bengal FC, as per ISL League committee.
Questions have already started to do rounds on social media from supporters of both the clubs and what the management has to say about this blunder is yet to be known.
What was also surprising was officials of both clubs were on stage and had seen the wrong logo.
The organisers should and could have done better in front of a global superstar.
Developing story.
