Mohun Bagan Super Giant are in advanced negotiations with Scottish attacking midfielder Greg Stewart, according to a source close to RevSportz. The Mariners are keen to bring back the former Mumbai City FC player, currently with Kilmarnock FC in the Scottish Premiership.

Stewart made a significant impact in Indian football before departing Mumbai City in the January transfer window. He returned to Scotland to be closer to family and hoped for better opportunities in the Premiership. In his 50 ISL appearances, Stewart scored 21 goals and provided numerous assists, playing a pivotal role in both Jamshedpur FC and Mumbai City FC winning the ISL Shield.

The 34-year-old boasts consecutive ISL Shields, winning with Jamshedpur in 2022 and Mumbai in 2023. He also played for Rangers FC in their 2021 Scottish Premiership triumph. However, Stewart’s return to Scotland with Kilmarnock FC hasn’t been fruitful. He has primarily been a substitute, starting just one match in nine appearances, with only 136 minutes played.

Given his limited playing time, Stewart is likely to be receptive to Mohun Bagan’s offer and a potential return to the ISL to showcase his attacking skills. A club source confirmed, “We are in advanced talks with Greg Stewart, but the deal is not finalized yet.”

Stewart also has experience of playing for several esteemed Scottish clubs like Dundee and Aberdeen, along with a stint at EFL Club Birmingham City. He established himself as an attacking menace in the ISL, known for his goal-scoring prowess from outside the box and his ability to capitalise on set-piece opportunities.

If Stewart joins Mohun Bagan, he could form a formidable attacking force alongside players like Dimi Petratos, Jason Cummings, and the versatile midfielder Apuia. This signing would potentially end the Mariners’ long-standing search for a versatile foreign player in this position.

If this move works out, then it could raise questions about the future of Armando Sadiku. The Albanian forward has been linked with a move to Kerala Blasters. While the Mohun Bagan management reportedly wants to offload Sadiku in this window, his hefty transfer fee presents an obstacle. Contracted with the club until May 2025, any potential buyer will need to offer a significant sum to secure his transfer.

Additionally, the club is expected to announce the signing of Jamie Maclaren, the Australian who is the A-League’s all-time leading goalscorer, very soon. With Cummings and Petratos already in the forward line, this potential signing further muddies the waters regarding Sadiku’s role at the club.
