Australia has announced their team for the upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. The 15 player squad will feature left arm spinner Sophie Molineux, who is returning after an injury layoff and leg-spinner Georgia Wareham, who is also making a comeback into the team after a groin injury. Their presence will bolster the squad as Australia aims to defend the World Cup title.
Physio Kate Beerworth shared some updates on the two spinners.
“Sophie Molineux is progressing well in her return from a knee injury, and we anticipate she’ll be available for the World Cup,” she said. “Georgia Wareham also back to full training following her adductor injury during the Hundred.”
Molineux has been on the sidelines since late last year post her knee surgery. She is unlikely to be a part of the warm-up ODI series against India ahead of the World Cup.
The squad will be led by Alyssa Healy, who is also returning to the squad after a run of injuries. She proved her form with an undefeated 137 runs against India A last month. Grace Harris has taken the final batting spot, and Georgia Voll also earned a place in the team after her impressive debut year. Voll, Molineux, Wareham, Phoebe Litchfield and Kim Garth, will be playing in their first 50 over World Cup.
Selector Shawn Flegler said, “A World Cup in India is one of cricket’s biggest assignments, but we believe this group is up for the challenge.” Australia will begin their campaign against New Zealand in Indore on October 1.
