In their first AFC Champions League group stage match at home, Mumbai City FC suffered a 2-0 defeat to Iranian club Nassaji Mazandaran. Despite displaying strong attacking abilities, Mumbai City FC couldn’t find the back of the net.
Manager Des Buckingham fielded a well-balanced team, with Phurba in goal, Tiri and Rostyn Griffiths in defense, Rahul Bheke and Akash Mishra as full-backs, and Apuia Ralte, Greg Stewart, and Yoell van Nieff in midfield. Lallianzuala Chhangte and Bipin Singh provided the attacking threat on the wings, while Jorge Pereyra Diaz led the attack through the center.
Mumbai City FC started the game aggressively, creating early opportunities. However, they couldn’t convert them into goals. Nassaji Mazandaran surprised with a goal in the 33rd minute, against the run of play, when Mohammad Hosseini found the net.
Despite dominating possession, Mumbai City FC struggled to create clear-cut chances. They came close to equalizing just before halftime when Bipin Singh’s volley narrowly missed the target.
In the second half, Mumbai City FC continued to press for an equalizer but couldn’t break down Nassaji’s defense. The Iranian club extended their lead in the 66th minute through Mohammadreza Azadi.
Mumbai City FC made efforts to cut the deficit, with Greg Stewart coming close, but Nassaji held their defensive shape and secured a 2-0 victory.
Mumbai City FC will now shift their focus to the Indian Super League, beginning their campaign against NorthEast United FC on September 24th.
